More about our teen nutritionists & dietitians
How our teen dietitians can help
There’s a lot of discovery and learning in your teen years. This is when you start to learn who you are and who you want to be. Unfortunately, it can also be a time when many young adults struggle with body image and eating challenges.
You develop your relationship with food and your eating habits very early on in life. It is up to the parents to set a good example of how they want their teen to eat. This is also an important growth period and consuming a nutrient-dense diet is essential.
However, this isn’t always easy and sometimes parents can feel overwhelmed with trying to navigate their teen’s eating challenges. This is where working with a dietitian can help. Let a professional guide the way for your teen, and your family, to create healthy eating habits.
Below are some ways working with a dietitian can help your teen and your family.
- Provide individual or family nutrition counseling.
- Evaluate your teen’s eating habits, behaviors, and thoughts surrounding food.
- Help to foster a healthy relationship with food and body image.
- Provide customized dietary recommendations that include preferences, allergies, intolerances, and financial limitations.
- Provide strategies to address selective eating or disordered eating behaviors.
- Educate teens and parents on creating healthy, balanced meals in the home as well as making healthy choices when building your plate or eating outside of the home.
- Provide ongoing support and motivation to both the individual and the family.
What to expect in your teen dietitian appointments
During an initial consultation, a dietitian will collect information from the teen and the parents regarding their teen’s food preferences, challenges, and limitations. If needed, the dietitian will also evaluate lab work and any medications.
From there, your dietitian will discuss your teen’s and family’s health goals and provide practical recommendations, tools, and resources to help. Your dietitian may set a goal or two for your teen or your family to work on together between visits if time permits.
During follow-up consultations, the dietitian will assess your teen’s progress and address any barriers that they encountered between sessions. They will then adjust their goals moving forward as needed based on this discussion.
How many sessions your teen will need with a dietitian will vary and is based on their specific needs. Some teens and parents may only need a few sessions to address their questions and concerns while others may need more in-depth counseling.
