View FAQsStep-by-Step Guide to Finding an Online Nutritionist Through Zaya Care
We all know that eating the right diet can improve our health and wellbeing. Turning that knowledge into action is what nutritionists and dietitians are trained for.
But how do you find a nutritionist or dietitian that is right for you?
At Zaya Care, we know the first step can be the hardest, so we created a free dietitian search tool that makes it as easy as possible to get your first appointment booked with the right provider for you and get it covered by insurance.
This guide will show you step-by-step instructions on how to use our dietitian search tool to match providers to your location, preferences, and insurance coverage.
We’ll also show you how to learn more about providers’ backgrounds, specialties, and approaches so you can choose a provider that understands your needs and helps you achieve long-term success.
Steps to finding a dietitian or nutritionist through Zaya Care
Our dietitian search tool will help you filter providers by some basic criteria—location, language, specialty, in-person or video appointments, and insurance.
Then, you can look more closely at your curated list to see who has an approach, philosophy, experience, or special training that matches what you’re looking for.
Once you know who you want to work with, you’ll pick an available appointment time and give us your contact and insurance information. With this, we can check your insurance coverage and let you know what, if any, cost there will be for the appointment.
90% of Zaya Care patients pay $0 for appointments thanks to insurance coverage, but whatever the cost may be, we’ll give you all the information before you meet with your chosen provider.
Our providers are all Registered Dietitians (RDs) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs). RD/RDNs are required to pass a national exam and to have specific degrees and training. They also must comply with state licensure and continuing education requirements. RD/RDNs are typically covered by insurance.
Quick note: “Nutritionists” also specialize in food and nutrition but are not always credentialed professionals. Therefore, nutritionists who are not RDs or RDNs aren’t covered by insurance and are not part of our network. Whenever we mention “nutritionist” on this site, you can assume we’re referring to an RD or RDN unless otherwise noted.
1) Go to our Dietitian Search Tool
When you arrive at Zaya Care’s dietitian search tool, you’ll select your state of residence so you can find a provider licensed in your state.
Next, you will be presented with a list of Registered Dietitians that can be filtered further according to these criteria:
- Insurance. Find your insurance carrier in the list of insurers that are accepted by our providers. If you don’t see your plan in the list, just skip this filter. You can enter your insurance information on a later screen. The list includes:
- Aetna
- Anthem NY
- Centivo
- Cigna
- Empire BlueCross BlueShield
- Oscar
- Oxford Freedom
- UnitedHealthcare
- Visit type. You can choose a virtual or in-person appointment. Keep in mind that if you’re open to doing your appointment over video, you can choose from providers anywhere in your state.
- Specialties. Many providers have special training or experience. Think about your goals, whether they be weight loss and heart health or dealing with food allergies and intolerances. You can filter for providers who specialize in that area. These include:
- Healthy Lifestyle
- Weight Loss, Gain, or Management
- Weight Loss Medication Counseling
- Fertility
- Vegetarian and Vegan Diets
- PCOS
- Nutrition in Cancer Care
- Heart Health
- Gastrointestinal Disorders/Gut Health
- Allergies and Intolerances
- Sports Nutrition
- Prediabetes and Diabetes
- And many more
- Language. Let us know your preferred language. Options include:
- English
- Mandarin Chinese
- Spanish
- German
- French
- Arabic
- American Sign Language
- Hindi
- Tagalog
- Haitian-Creole
- And more
2) Learn more about providers to find your fit
After setting your filters, you’ll get a list of dietitians fitting your criteria. Each dietitian has a profile that provides more information, so you can choose someone you feel comfortable working with and relying on as a long-term partner for your health.
In the About me section, providers describe their experience, training, interests, and approach.
Some might focus on women’s health or the unique challenges presented by chronic illnesses like high blood pressure or diabetes. Others might specialize in helping patients decrease inflammation or elevate exercise performance through nutrition.
Whatever your goals are, there is probably a dietitian who has experience helping people achieve them.
This section can also give you a sense of the provider’s philosophy or style. They might highlight the importance of honoring cultural food preferences or be proponents of the Healthy at Every Size (HAES) movement. They may describe their style as gentle and supportive or say they work hard to keep you accountable.
Profiles also include the information you already entered. So, you can confirm the provider’s specializations, languages spoken, insurance accepted, and licenses carried.
Finally, there is a button to book an appointment.
3) Book an appointment
When you click on Book appointment, you’ll be shown a provider’s availability. You can pick an appointment type (video, office, home) and time from the available slots on the calendar.
Next, we’ll prompt you to provide the following information:
- Basic information. Your name, email, phone number, state, and birthdate.
- Insurance details. Your carrier, plan, and member ID number.
- Billing information. A payment method is collected, but no charge will be made unless you fail to show up for an appointment or cancel within the required timeframe (24 hours). If your insurance says you are responsible for full or partial payment for your appointment, you will be notified of this before your appointment.
If you’d prefer to make an appointment over the phone, you can call (646) 443-6113. You’ll speak to a real live person, we promise!
4) Review your cost (if any) & decide if you want to proceed
Zaya Care will use the information you provide to run an eligibility check with your insurance provider. We will send you an email with as much information as possible on how much your insurance will cover and what you might have to pay out-of-pocket.
If you owe anything for your appointment, we’ll notify you how much and confirm if you want to keep the appointment.
If your insurance covers nutrition counseling, you could pay as little as $0, depending on your plan.
It’s worth noting that 90% of Zaya Care patients pay $0 for nutrition care with a Registered Dietitian, as we are in-network with many major carriers.
5) Start your journey to better health!
If you’ve never met with a dietitian before, it is helpful to know what to expect before your first appointment. Some people think they will be judged on what they eat or told that they can never have their favorite foods again. Not so.
Instead, you can expect your provider to listen, educate, support, and motivate you to adopt healthy nutrition habits and achieve your goals.
Your initial appointment will most likely be 45 minutes to an hour. During this appointment, your dietitian will get to know you and your nutrition needs. You may be asked questions about your health history, diet history, eating patterns, food budget, traditions around food, and more.
The number of follow-up appointments you need depends on your situation. These appointments typically take less time. Your dietitian will assess your progress and make changes as needed.
When considering whether seeing a nutritionist is worth your time and money, keep in mind that almost everyone can benefit from the improvements in energy, mood, and overall health that nutrition counseling can provide.
