More about our geriatric nutritionists & dietitians
How our geriatric dietitians can help seniors
Navigating nutrition as a senior can be a special challenge. A variety of health ailments and conditions, potential taste alterations from medications, and other dietary challenges can take the joy out of eating.
Don’t let your loved ones struggle with their diet alone. A geriatric dietitian can help ensure that your loved ones are meeting their nutrition needs to thrive during the aging process. Below are some ways working with a geriatric dietitian may be able to help you or your loved ones:
- Evaluate dietary patterns and provide clinically-based recommendations.
- Address any diet-related health challenges such as food intolerances, food allergies, dysphagia, malnutrition, taste alterations, and more.
- Help with the management of various health conditions through diet, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, etc.
- Create a personalized meal plan that takes into consideration food preferences, challenges, and existing health conditions
- Provide ongoing support and motivation for both clients and caregivers.
What to expect in your geriatric dietitian appointments
During an initial consultation, your geriatric dietitian will evaluate your current health status, dietary patterns, and conditions that affect your eating. You can expect your dietitian to inquire about previous lab work, doctor visits, and medications.
From there, your dietitian will evaluate your goals and challenges and provide practical recommendations, tools, and resources to help. You may set a goal or two together to work on between visits if time permits.
During follow-up consultations, your dietitian will assess your progress and address any barriers that you encountered between your sessions. Your dietitian may adjust your goals moving forward based on these to make sure your plan works best for you.
How many sessions you have with your dietitian will depend on your challenges and goals. Some clients may only need a few, while others may require more. You can inquire about the estimated number of sessions needed during your initial visit with your dietitian.
